So much has been documented about the ill-fated ship, but it was only recently that I discovered the lesser-known tale—the story of the RMS Titanic’s cat.
The Ship’s Cat
As you may well know, cats were commonly kept on ships as good luck charms, companions, and much needed controllers of the mouse population. According to various sources, this particular cat was a tabby named Jenny.
A Fateful Decision
Legend has it that Jenny gave birth to a litter of kittens shortly before the Titanic set sail from Southampton on April 10, 1912. As the ship prepared to depart, Jenny was reportedly seen relocating her newborns off the ship and onto the dock.
The Titanic’s Tragedy
Despite the Titanic being touted as “unsinkable,” it met a tragic end; striking an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912. As the ship sank, over 1,500 lives were lost. But thanks to Jenny, her kittens survived. Her decision to move them has been interpreted by some as an eerie premonition, as though she sensed the impending disaster. Of course, it could just be coincidence, and excellent timing on Jenny’s part!
